Lecture: Are “We the Media” Taking Over the News?
We invite everyone interested to socialize and discuss the concept of “citizen journalism” with Lauren Hertel, expert in new media technologies and lecturer at the University of Florida. The lecture will be held at Mediacentar Sarajevo on May 7, 2007 from 18.00 to 20.00. Translation into B/C/S is provided. Final date for confirming participation: May 1, 2007.
The lecture on “Citizen journalism: Are “We the media” Taking Over the News” is a project implemented by the US Embassy in BiH Office of Public Affairs, in the framework of which experts in various fields from the United States, in cooperation with BiH institutions, visit BiH every year with the aim of exchanging know-how and experience.
Ms. Hertel will speak on the role and basic forms of citizen journalism. She will give special attention to the issue of where (non)journalists start to write news and also to the business model of citizen journalism and opportunities for journalists in the new media world. The lecturer will give attention to the impact of citizen journalism on global media organizations and national governments, as well as legislation and ethics in the new media world.
The lecture at Mediacentar Sarajevo will be in English with translation provided into B/C/S languages.
Lauren Hertel teaches multimedia journalism at the University of Florida Department of Telecommunication. As an online editor in California, she developed a model for a four-hour multimedia training program for the Dow Jones media group. She is presently working on a report on success factors in newsroom networking for the Knight Foundation. Lauren Hertel has a Master’s Degree in Journalism and City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and she has a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University, New York. As a lecturer in the field of convergence and urban reporting, she has worked all over the United States and abroad. She has received a number of academic awards.
