How do you become an expert in journalistic internet ethics? David Brewer, the lead trainer in this highly interactive program, will combine education employing face-to-face workshops and e-learning. Final date for applications: 26 May 2008.
Duration: The program lasts eight months and includes two three-day face-to-face workshops, while the rest of learning will take place online using MOODLE or Wiki platform. Final date for applications: 26 May 2008
Who is the workshop designed for: Editors and journalists of online editions of broadcast and print media in SEENPM member countries: Albania (1 candidate), Bosnia-Herzegovina (5 candidates), Bulgaria (1 candidate), Croatia (2 candidates), Hungary (1 candidate), Kosovo (1 candidate), Macedonia (1 candidate), Moldova (1 candidate), Montenegro (2 candidates), Romania (1 candidate), Serbia (1 candidate) and Slovenia (1 candidate).
Working language: English
Why should I apply:
In the past, broadcasters and publishers have controlled mass media communications via the printing presses and broadcast airwaves. The Internet now empowers every man, woman and child with online access to become a publisher. However, the Internet is bringing the two together through the concept of 'citizen journalism,' as well as various other forms of interactivity used by mainstream media to ‘engage the audience’. This offers fresh challenges and raises new ethical issues for media operations broadcasting online or receiving submitted content from an online audience.
The course will examine in what way commonly accepted journalistic ethics are tested by the Internet and will look at the pitfalls facing journalists publishing on the Web. The workshop program will be practically-oriented and, among other things, real-life examples will be presented where journalistic integrity and editorial ethics are tested by the Internet.
Following the face-to-face session the participants will write a paper on what they see as the ethical challenges presented by gathering and presenting news online and engaging with the online audience and publishing material produced by an online audience.
What will I learn:
* how the Internet demands fresh vigilance regarding issues such as truth, accuracy, impartiality, fairness, privacy, taste and decency, offence, incitement, editorial independence, accountability and authenticity
* what are the online challenges for journalistic ethics, regional and international variations
* how to protect sources
* concepts such as ‘The Global Common’, ‘Freedom of Expression’ and ‘Privacy’ will be examined and the implications these have on Internet ethics will be interpreted
* what traditional media operations must do to harness the opportunities offered by the Internet to further enhance understanding, inform the public debate and engage the audience
* issues such as the following will be looked at: who is responsible for policing the Internet and deciding on what is ethical or not and what is the role of the media in this.
During the eight-month program, participants will pull together fresh, best-practice recommendations for Internet editorial ethics based on commonly accepted editorial norms, the fresh opportunities offered by the World Wide Web, and regional, religious and cultural sensitivities.
